The Study Shami Arabic (Ammiya) in Palestine (1-12 Weeks) program offers an enriching experience for individuals eager to learn and immerse themselves in Shami Arabic (also known as Levantine Arabic or Ammiya). This program not only focuses on building language skills but also provides opportunities to practice with native speakers in Palestine, enhancing both fluency and cultural understanding. Shami Arabic is spoken by approximately 42 million people across four Arab countries: Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria, making it a valuable linguistic and cultural asset.

Arabic, one of the official languages of the United Nations, is among the most widely spoken languages in the world. It serves as the primary language across the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, and North Africa. Often referred to as “the language of Daad,” Arabic is distinguished by the presence of the unique letter daad, which is not found in any other language globally.

Daily exposure and regular practice accelerate language acquisition, helping learners build confidence and fluency efficiently.h day, students are able to internalize the information, which improves their linguistic skills and speeds up fluency.

When Does Studying Shami Arabic (Ammiya) in Palestine Take Place?

The Study Shami Arabic (Ammiya) in Palestine Program offers a remarkable level of flexibility, allowing participants to customize their Arabic language learning experience according to their individual preferences. Students have the freedom to select the desired start and end dates for their program, tailoring it to fit their specific needs.

How Does Being in Palestine Help You Improve Your Arabic?

To truly master a foreign language, immersion in a country where it is spoken is essential. While classroom learning provides a foundation, achieving fluency requires real-life practice and cultural engagement, making studying abroad an invaluable experience.

Palestine stands out among Arabic-learning destinations due to its small expatriate community and the limited presence of English in daily life. This environment naturally encourages learners to communicate and navigate their surroundings using Arabic, fostering rapid improvement in both fluency and comprehension.

In Palestine, the Palestinian Center in Hebron provides you with the essential tools and opportunities to immerse yourself in the local culture, integrate into society, and build meaningful connections with the city’s residents, enhancing both your Arabic learning experience and personal growth

Two Types of Shami Arabic (Ammiya) Courses in Palestine:

1. Intensive Shami Arabic Courses (one on one)- 4 Hours / 5 Days a Week

2. Super Intensive Shami Arabic Courses (one on one) 6 Hours / 5 Days a Week

Why You Should Study Arabic

  • Arabic, known as the language of Daad, is one of the most widely spoken languages within the Semitic language family. It is spoken across the Arab world and extends to many regions such as Turkey, Ahwaz, Mali, Chad, Senegal, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iran, and South Sudan.
  • The Arabic language is a key representative of ancient Arab and Islamic culture and civilization. It is a living, modern language that reflects a broad spectrum of human societies and is integral to a vital geographical region that garners significant global attention.
  • With the growing demand for Arabic learning by non-native speakers for reasons ranging from political, diplomatic, and economic to religious, cultural, educational, and even touristic purposes, there is an increasing need for quality Arabic language programs.
  • Recognizing this gap, the Palestinian Center for Education has developed a comprehensive and innovative Arabic language program for non-native speakers. This program is designed to meet the diverse goals of learners, offering a distinctive, up-to-date, and unconventional approach to Arabic language education.

What Are the Differences Between MSA and Palestinian Arabic?

Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)

Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), also known as Fus’ha, is the formal, standardized version of Arabic used throughout the Arab world. It is the language of written communication, used in literature, official documents, and media such as news broadcasts and formal speeches.

MSA adheres to strict grammatical rules and is consistent across different regions, making it a unifying language for Arabic speakers from various countries. However, MSA is rarely spoken in everyday life, and it is primarily learned through formal education. Its structured nature makes it ideal for professional and academic settings, though it does not reflect the informal, conversational style of daily communication.

Levantine Arabic – Palestinian Ammiya

Palestinian Ammiya, a dialect of Levantine Arabic, is the spoken vernacular used in everyday communication throughout Palestine. Unlike MSA, Ammiya is informal and deeply intertwined with local culture. It reflects the unique history of the region, influenced by languages such as Turkish, Hebrew, and English.

The grammar of Palestinian Ammiya is more flexible, and its vocabulary can differ significantly from MSA, making it more accessible for casual, day-to-day interactions. Palestinian Ammiya evolves over time, adapting through social and generational shifts. It is learned naturally within families and communities, and while it is not used for formal writing or official purposes, it is central to cultural identity and daily conversations.

What visa do you need to Study Arabic in Palestine?

To study Arabic in Palestine, obtaining an Israeli tourist visa allowing a stay of up to 3 months is necessary. Acquiring a volunteer visa directly in Palestine can be challenging.

Visa Requirements for Palestine

If you belong to a country with an exemption agreement with Israel, you can acquire a tourist visa upon arriving at either Ben Gurion Airport (Tel Aviv) or the Allenby-King Hussein Bridge border crossing. Typically, citizens from countries like the United States and European nations are granted three-month visas upon arrival, valid for a 90-day period.

However, if your home country does not have an exemption agreement with Israel, it is essential to obtain a visa from the Israeli embassy or consulate in your home country before your visit. It’s worth noting that Israel now issues visas on a separate card containing a barcode to avoid passport stamps, as some Arab countries do not accept Israeli passport stamps. Ensure to verify whether your native country participates in a visa exemption agreement.

What if your passport isn’t suitable for a tourist visa?

Regrettably, individuals from countries such as Pakistan and India must obtain a visa from the Israeli embassy in their respective countries if they wish to volunteer in Palestine. This process can be particularly challenging as Israel maintains control over all entry points. Consequently, securing a visa becomes a prerequisite even before initiating the volunteer application.

Is the West Bank safe?

Yes, the West Bank is relatively safe. Most incidents or conflicts occur in areas far from the main city centers where Arabic programs typically take place. Cities like Hebron, Bethlehem, and Ramallah, where most volunteering programs are hosted, generally maintain a stable and safe environment.

Arabic students often find the local community welcoming and supportive, which adds to the overall feeling of security. Nevertheless, we encourage participants to stay updated on local news and follow any guidance provided by their hosts to ensure their safety.

Is prior knowledge of Arabic required to join the Arabic program?

No, prior knowledge of Arabic is not a requirement to join the Arabic program at Go Palestine. Our program is open to participants of all levels, from complete beginners with zero knowledge of Arabic to advanced learners looking to enhance their skills.

We offer a supportive and inclusive environment tailored to meet you at your current level, ensuring that you can learn, contribute, and grow effectively. Whether you’re just starting your journey with Arabic or seeking to refine your fluency, our program provides the resources and guidance you need to succeed. Join us and make a positive impact while deepening your connection to this remarkable region.

Is it possible to combine this program with another Program?

Yes, this program can be combined with one or more of the other internship or volunteer programs that the center offers. For example, you may choose one week or more to complete this program, and combine this with another week or more of another program.

Can I extend the term of my Program while I’m there?

Yes, participants are allowed to extend their participation period. In this case, you must inform the center coordinator at least one week before the end of the current program.
