Why Do Palestinians Love to Learn English?

The English Language is the most spoken language in the world and the third most native speaker in the world. It is also the lingua franca used by people around the world to communicate with those from different cultures and with different native languages.

Almost 80 countries list English as an official language and around 400 million people worldwide speak English. In addition, the most of important and influential scientific papers and articles are written in English, which makes it the language of science and scientists.

Many of the oldest and most modern universities and teaching institutes around the world offer courses primarily in English. In terms of trade and the global international economy, especially e-commerce, English is the primary language. It doesn’t stop there, it Is the language of tourism and tourists as English is the predominant language used by tourists.

Palestinians believe that learning English is important largely because it will help them to get good jobs with high salaries. Most high-end jobs require a number of skills, notably English, whether in Palestine itself or in other countries around the world.

They also think that having the skills to speak English will make their travel more enjoyable and easier. Knowledge of English will enable them to handle different situations that they will encounter during their travel abroad, especially in the English-speaking world.

Palestinians are one of the most educated people in the Middle East where the rate of literacy in Palestine is approximately is 97%, reflecting Palestinians eagerness to learn and study new subjects and ideas.  Studying abroad is the dream of many young Palestinians, but a lack of funds often prevents them from doing so.

Therefore, they often seek for scholarships to cover their study and living expenses abroad. As you might already know, scholarships are provided from a number of Arab institutions and foreign courtiers which require a number of qualifications. The most prominent of those qualifications is a level of fluency in English.

The Palestinian Center in Hebron makes a great effort to offer English courses to Palestinians by recruiting International volunteers who come from all over the world to teach English while learning Arabic.
