Why Palestine is the best place to learn Arabic?

Arabic is one of the most spoken languages within the Semitic language group, and the fourth most used in the world, with over 460 million speakers around the globe.

There is a diverse range of reasons to study Arabic in Palestine, but the single most effective way of learning for any student is to live in an Arabic-speaking country. Making use of the language on a day-to-day basis, and in a practical context, with native speakers is by far the most efficient way to learn. Using the language to do everyday things, from buying groceries, negotiating with a taxi driver, or chatting with a host family about the day, is by far the best way to practice.

An opportunity to learn about Palestinian culture and history

Whether for the rich cultural and religious sites of Palestine, to get a sense of contemporary life under occupation, or perhaps just to make friends and enjoy the temperate climate, students from around the world come to Palestine to learn Fusha (MSA) and dialect with native speakers.

Many of those looking to improve, or begin on Arabic look to the Levant to study. Levantine Arabic dialect or Shami, used throughout the Eastern Mediterranean strip including Palestine, is considered to be the most similar to MSA. Levantine dialect is therefore seen as easier to learn than others such as Morocco’s Darija, particularly for students with a basis of knowledge in MSA. Levantine is also seen as the most useful to study, since knowledge of that dialect is more readily transferrable to dialects from other regions such as Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan.

Teachers whose native language is the Palestinian dialect offer students fulsome training in the details of the language, as well as an opportunity to get to know the culture.

Students have the opportunity to learn the words and phrases specific to the region, as well as the various social cues and cultural sensitivities of locals. Lessons can be used to discuss and debate cultural issues and differences, to watch popular music videos and read news articles on contemporary events, and to talk about the best spots to visit in the area.

Stay with a Palestinian host family

Some educational centers in Palestine offer students of Arabic the option of living with a host family during their stay.

Living with a host family provides a great opportunity to learn more about Palestinian culture, and everyday life, and a chance to practice dialect or MSA after class. Speaking in an informal context with friendly, familiar faces is a great confidence builder, and one of the best ways of finding the motivation to learn.
