At the Palestinian Center in Hebron, Palestine, kids can come to learn about the English language and foreign cultures by following lessons given by local English teachers and foreign volunteers. The advantage of having the opportunity to talk with foreign volunteers is that the student will be hearing the actual native pronunciation of the English language whilst also practicing it by talking with the volunteers.
The classes will be focused on the 4 main skills of learning a language: Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking. It is important for all language-learners to master these skill through exercise, activities or games. Some of the activities offered at the Palestinian Center include: recreate a real conversation as a dialogue, working in groups with other students, watching and listening to English videos and acting.
The main subjects that the students will be learning, are about basic daily conversation. It is important that the student will be able to use their knowledge in real-life situations. These subjects include: Introducing yourself, asking the time, talking about hobbies, basic grammar, asking for directions… The students are divided into groups based on their current English level, in order to make everyone learn something within their own capacities.
One of our teachers, Ahlam, shared her opinion about why she works at the Palestinian Center. She told that she loves teaching and just working with kids in general. She feels that kids have a need for good education including general moral advice and she said that she always wanted to help people in that way.
In my opinion the English classes can be very helpful for kids as I can really feel they are making progress with the basic language skills, even within the 4 days i’ve been helping as an assistant. I think it is important for everyone to learn another language or get some kind of education, as it creates possibilities in the future.
